In 2006 in my 2nd term as a Commissioner on the Paterson Board of Education, I made a mistake that will forever changed my life. My lapse of judgement as a result of my alcohol and drug addiction allowed me to succumb to the temptation of accepting bribes. Unbeknownst to me, I was part of an FBI operation called “Operation Broken Boards”, and my single mistake would land me in federal prison. During my incarceration, I lost my arrogance and gained humility. I understand that anyone can make a mistake in life and be transformed by it. I understand that good people make bad decisions and should not pay for it the rest of their life.
In 2008 Chauncey was convicted of accepting bribes and sentence to 21 months at Lewisburg Penitentiary in Pennsylvania that stemmed from a “lapse in judgment” caused by his alcohol, drug addiction and PTSD. While at Lewisburg Chauncey engaged in a aggressive drug rehabilitation program as well religious counseling, religious services and religious groups meetings. Chauncey worked at night on the compound at the power house or call "The Big House" that was written in bold letters across the back wall of the plant. The power house supplied power to the whole compound. Chauncey read meters at night monitoring electric, gas, water pumps and boilers. During the day Chauncey also spent most of his time in the library reading the bible and learning about current events as they related to international and America politics and the financial sector.
In 2011 Chauncey was released from prison and began to serve a 3 year parole. During Chauncey release from prison he struggled with the transition from prison back into society. Chauncey volunteered to enter into out-patient rehabilitation and counseling. During that time Chauncey relapsed and enter into a in-patient rehabilitation facility for 30 days. Upon Chauncey's release from in-patient care, Chauncey entered into a out-patient program for 6 months. Chauncey began attending AA and NA meetings for serval years to listen and share his experiences. Chauncey learned that the only way he could battle his addiction is relying on his high power. This is were Chauncey began reading and studying the Bible more to search for answers of his purpose in life.
As a result on my past struggles with addiction, homelessness, and reentry to the public after spending time in prison. Brown stated: “Every resident in Paterson faces the harsh effects of drugs every day. Whether through the rampant crime plaguing our city, the gun violence in trafficking areas, or family members suffering from addiction, everyone is affected." Chauncey life started to evolve and unfold in a manner that only his father Elohim (G-D) could make happen. As Chauncey became more spiritually aware his duty to serve his community and help others like himself to survive and thrive began Chauncey top priority.
Now I have the opportunity to pay it forward, from my lessons learned in 2019 I founded and formed Ex-Offenders Helping People Help Others which is a non-profit organization helping ex-felons transition back into society.
